Job Description
About the Role
This role involves designing, developing, and operating a traffic & infrastructure management system used in the railway sector. These are complex real-time computer systems used by rail operators 24/7 to control and manage rail infrastructure.
The architect will play a key role in shaping the system’s evolution, ensuring alignment with long-term goals, safety and security standards, and operational excellence.
The service provider will take a role of system architect and analyst.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as a key liaison between the system supplier and the client to clarify and document (high-level functional) requirements
- Translate business and operational needs into a future-proof system architecture that aligns with the product roadmap
- Create system architecture and high-level design documents
- Support the team by bringing added value in every aspect of the development lifecycle
- Ensure architectural consistency across teams and components, with a focus on safety, security, maintainability, and serviceability
- Moderate workshops and technical discussions to gather input and validate architectural decisions
- Deliver high-quality documentation in line with internal quality processes and project milestones
- Support the roadmap by clarifying and documenting new high-level customer needs
Task examples:
The service provider will:
- Clarify new high-level functionalities with the client and document the clarifications in a high-level requirement document
- Propose architectural solutions that integrate long-term vision and operational constraints
- Ensure design choices align with the longer-term vision and are future-proof and serviceable
- Participate in safety and security-related activities such as TRA and FMEA
- Safeguard the interests of all key stakeholders
- Translate requirements into a high-level system architecture, ensuring consistency and feasibility across teams, while taking into account safety, security, and maintainability
- Collaborate closely during the clarification phase with various teams to obtain a high-level requirement document detailed enough to:
- Estimate effort and plan implementation
- Enable teams to start implementation autonomously
- Support development teams during implementation phases when architectural guidance or support is required
- Deliver all required deliverables on time, reviewed and approved, in line with quality processes
Objectives:
Tasks span the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Competencies:
Languages: Dutch / French / English — Fluent written and spoken English is essential.
Requirements
- Experience in requirement determination
- Skilled in moderating workshops to gather customer needs while adhering to deadlines and deliverables
- Ability to translate requirements into structured, clear, and complete documentation
- Knowledge of data modeling
- Familiarity with design tools (e.g., UML)
- Experience in UI application design
- Experience in software implementations
- Understanding of hardware, software, web portals, internet/intranet architecture, firewalls, servers, and security
- Full SDLC experience
- Willingness to modernize legacy safety systems
Desirable skills:
- Knowledge of railway signalization is a plus but not required
