**About the Role **
We are hiring a Rust Developer to join Helfie's backend engineering group, working on the performance-critical Rust services that power our Azure-hosted health platform. You will build and optimise the systems that handle image pipelines, real-time inference traffic to our ML scoring endpoints, and low-latency APIs consumed by our iOS and Android clients.

The role is based in Helfie's Melbourne office and operates within an Agentic-First organisation, where AI coding assistants, automated testing, and AI-driven observability are embedded into daily engineering workflows. You will work inside a fast-paced, Agile team that ships through Helfie's gate-based delivery pipeline — Architecture → Dev → Build → Prepare → Production — collaborating closely with architects, mobile, ML, and DevOps engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the design, building, and maintenance of high-performance codebases that serve Helfie’s users.
• Contribute to Helfie's polyglot backends running on Azure.
• Participate fully in an Agile delivery cadence — sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, reviews, and retrospectives — and ship through the gated Dev → Build → Prepare → Production pipeline.
• Write clear, well tested, idiomatic code, be familiar with asynchronous, concurrent, property based testing and fuzzing concepts.
• Collaborate with DevOps and SecDevOps to harden deployments: managed identity auth, Key Vault-backed secrets, private endpoint connectivity, and New Relic / Application Insights instrumentation.
• Troubleshoot production issues across distributed services using Azure Monitor, New Relic, and log correlation, and drive root-cause fixes back into the codebase.
• Leverage AI coding tools with responsibility, own what you push.
• Contribute to architectural design and technical documentation, participate in code reviews to raise the quality bar across the backend.

**Requirements: **

• Strong foundational programming skills in statically/strongly typed, compiled languages – ideally Rust (If you have extensive C/C++/Zig/Fortran or similar experience, you can be trained in Rust and become productive quickly).
• Comfortable digesting new APIs and integrating them into existing and greenfield codebases.
• Strong VCS skills, we use git and we expect you to have a thorough understanding of its strengths and weaknesses.
• Strong DevOps skills in CI/CD pipelines, containerisation, scripting and SecDevOps practices in general.
• Strong database design, optimisation and maintenance experience (Postgres or similar, relational and non-relational)
• Familiarity with performance profiling, benchmarking tools.
• Comfort collaborating across a polyglot stack — We have existing Java, Python, Kotlin and iOS code that must continue to run.

Candidates with the following will be highly regarded:

• ML/Data experience, either in MLOps, data engineering or even model training
• Open-source contributions and or portfolio work
• High quality production/hobby Functional Programming experiences (OCaml/Haskell etc)

**Leadership & Communication **

• Proven ability to thrive in an Agile development environment — self-directed, responsive to change, and comfortable estimating, committing, and delivering against sprint goals.
• Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain technical trade-offs to engineers, architects, and non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong collaborative mindset across geographically distributed teams and time zones.
• Fluency with AI tooling — using LLM-based coding assistants, AI-assisted testing, and agentic workflows to raise personal productivity without compromising code quality.

Must-Have Background

• Demonstrable track record of shipping product in production at meaningful scale or complexity.
• Experience working inside a gated release / environment-promotion model and with trunk-based or feature-branch workflows.
• Commitment to high standards of code quality, security, and testing in a regulated or health-sensitive domain (or comparable high-assurance environment).
• Bachelor's degree in CompSci, Software Engineering, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
• Demonstrated programming and design capability on pen & paper.
