About the Role
Lead our Core Modelling Domain: the technical heart of hx Renew that provides customers with a highly customizable modelling environment for building sophisticated insurance pricing models. As our most Senior Engineering Manager, you'll oversee a high-performing 30-person function while architecting its strategic restructuring into specialised teams. This role combines hands-on leadership with organisational transformation, designed to evolve into an Associate Director of Engineering position as we scale. You'll drive significant results across multiple teams that directly impact our mission to transform AI-driven technology.
Key Responsibilities
Domain Leadership & Strategic Oversight
- Own the technical vision and roadmap for our Core Modelling Domain—our most business-critical function serving actuaries and underwriters who create complex mathematical pricing models
- Oversee a high-performing 30-person function, including Engineering Manager, Senior Product Manager, and 25+ engineers (Staff to Mid-level)
- Influence company-wide technical direction and architecture decisions
- Lead strategic restructuring from 2-3 large teams into multiple smaller, highly specialised teams focused on specific domain capabilities
- Participate in Incident Management on-call rotation, working with platform and development teams to ensure availability goals are met for this mission-critical system
- Lead and drive significant results for multiple teams with complex product/program scope that directly impact our broader mission
Team Leadership & Direct Management - Directly manage 7-9 reports, including core engineering squad (3-4 engineers), Tech Leads, and Engineering Manager
- Conduct regular 1:1s across all direct reports, building deep trust and providing strategic coaching, and mentor engineers transitioning into leadership roles
- Attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent for this critical domain covering significant product scope
- Build and maintain culture of high performance, continuous learning, and technical excellence across all teams
- Create an environment where engineers can grow into Tech Lead and Engineering Manager roles
- Mentor other engineering managers and establish succession planning for continued organisational growth
- Contribute to broader engineering culture and establish thought leadership both internally and externally
Organisational Transformation & Scaling - Partner with VP Engineering and Director of Engineering(s) to design and execute the organisational structure transformation that enables multiple specialised teams to work cohesively
- Build sustainable systems for managing multiple engineering teams with Engineering Manager and Tech Lead direct reports
- Lead business-critical cross-functional initiatives in addition to direct team management
- Develop and execute process enhancements while strategically influencing leadership decisions across multiple organisational levels
- Maintain technical authority by partnering with Senior and Staff Engineers to set up and facilitate ideation sessions and technical workshops. Support Product Managers in converting the outcomes into product features.
- Ensure technical excellence while balancing innovation with stability for business-critical systems
- Drive technical strategy decisions that enable platform customisation and scalability, balancing strategic thinking with hands-on operational leadership
Requirements
- Minimum 5+ years managing multiple software engineering teams with progression to senior management roles
- Proven experience managing managers and developing other engineering leaders
- Experience leading organisational restructuring and team topology changes
- Track record of scaling engineering organisations and building sustainable frameworks
- Experience with incident management and maintaining high-availability systems
- We do not require you to be hands-on coding; however, previous experience as a backend engineer designing modern cloud architecture and functional programming is essential:
- Web services
- Database technology: We currently use PostgreSQL (AWS RDS), but any SQL or NoSQL experience will be a plus.
- APIs - structure and design best practices (including security, resilience, versioning)
- Platform architecture and design - we use AWS, Terraform, Docker
- We currently use Rust, Kotlin, and Python. Understanding of any of them would be great, but experience using any relatively modern language is required.
- Experience collaborating with senior product leaders, executive stakeholders, and ability to see beyond immediate needs to build scalable, long-term solutions
- Ability to influence and communicate effectively across all organisational levels
- Processes such as Software Development Lifecycles, Personal Development Planning, Enterprise customer strategies
- Experience within similar dynamic, scale-up environments
